This year, Donal Ryan became Ireland's first winner of France's prestigious Prix Jean Monnet de Littérature. He's author of 'The Spinning Heart'; 'The Thing About December'; 'All We Shall Know'; 'From A Low And Quiet Sea' and 'Strange Flowers'. Winner of many literary awards, Donal is also an experienced teacher of creative writing based at the University of Limerick

Cat is an experienced author, teacher, facilitator and screenwriter. She's also one of the original Winter School alumni, and we're delighted she's joining us this year as mentor in residence.

Fí is another of our WinterSchool alumni and joins us this year as a mentor and facilitator. Her debut novel 'Boys Don't Cry' was published in 2021 and is already on reading lists all over the world.

Manager of Hotel Doolin, Donal's also an award-winning writer, an expert in sustainable hospitality, a surfer, a ranconteur, and long-time ally of Winter School. He will be reading from one of his award-winning short stories. He'll also be welcoming guests, keeping a vigilant eye on the ambient temperature, soothing shattered nerves, responding swiftly and discreetly to eccentric requests, and with the support of his brilliant team at Hotel Doolin, quietly making sure Winter School is the pocket of paradise we've grown to love.
Winter School Mentor in Residence
Sheila Killian is a writer based outside Limerick City. She was born in Roscommon, in the dead centre of Ireland, and now teaches at University of Limerick. Her fiction, poetry and travel writing have won awards in Ireland and the UK, and her work has been broadcast on RTE Radio. She is a member of Writepace, and spends as much time as she can by the sea. Her first novel, Something Bigger, was published by Caritas Press in July 2021.

Kit is one of the founding members of the UL Winter School team and a wonderful supporter of UL Creative Writing. While she can't join us in person this year, she'll be bringing you a pre-recorded message sharing her wise, useful advice about how to make the most of Winter School while you're with us.

Justine Carbery is a writer, journalist and lecturer in Creative Writing. She writes for The Sunday Independent, The Gloss magazine and Image. Her short stories have been published in various anthologies and literary journals. She has been practicing yoga for 30 years and is a fan of meditation and transformational breath-work, as well as wild sea swimming. With expertise in writing for wellness, Justine will be leading early morning yoga and guided meditations to keep us balanced and focused.

Jo Unwin is a literary agent based in London. She'll be joining us online during winter school to share advice and give guidance to our participating writers. (PLEASE NOTE: This year, Jo's session will take place online, and may be pre-recorded).

Sarah's the founder of UL Creative Winter School. She's a prof at UL, and an award-winning teacher and novelist. Novels include 'The Apple Tart of Hope' and 'All The Money in the World'

Professor Eoin Devereux teaches at UL. He co-writes and co-performs The Cedarwood Chronicles with Gavin Friday on U2 X-Radio. His work has been published The Irish Times; Janus Literary Magazine; The Stony Thursday Book, Southwords; The Poetry Bus; HCE Review and broadcast by RTE's The Poetry Programme, The Bookshow on One and Sunday Miscellany. Eoin leads the module Creative Writing In The Community on UL’s MA in Creative Writing.
